How to Prepare and Cook Tofu
Check out our video below to learn how to make baked or pan-fried tofu, for adding to veggie bowls, salads or sandwiches.
Step-by-Step Directions for Simple Baked or Pan Fried Tofu
Step 1. Drain water from tofu package. Remove tofu and place in the center of a towel, folding the towel around it. Put a heavy object on top of the towel to press the water out of the tofu, for 15-30 minutes (based on your preference).
- You can wrap the tofu in paper towels as well, but I have several dedicated towels just for pressing the tofu, for environmental reasons.
- I use a cast iron skillet or a heavy baking dish to place on top of the tofu as my heavy object, but cookbooks or other heavy items will work as well.
- Some people buy tofu presses, but I don’t have space for one and am more on the minimalist side so I never bought one. I’m sure they work great!
Step 2. Once the water is pressed out, cut the tofu into cubes or slices.
Step 3. Now, you can either bake or pan fry the tofu. The cubes are a bit easier to bake, and both are easy to pan fry.
Step 4. Now, you can either bake or pan fry the tofu. The cubes are a bit easier to bake, and both are easy to pan fry.
Step 5. If baking, place the tofu on a cookie sheet, lined with parchment paper (helps the tofu to not stick to the pan). Back at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes. Remove from oven and add to desired dishes.
Step 6. If pan frying, add a light amount of oil to a pan and allow to heat up. Be advised, the oil may splatter a bit if it is very hot. Some people suggest using splatter screens to help with this. Turn the tofu to fry each side of the cube or slices. Around 20 minutes to cook.
Step 7. The tofu is ready, and can be added to any of your favorite sandwiches, veggie bowls, stir-fry’s or salads!
